Conceptions of Content Selection in Coursebooks

(by Aleksandra Achtelik, Aleksandra Janowska, Małgorzata Kita, Magdalena Pastuch, Jolanta Tambor)

LECTURES:

  • general issues, typology of coursebooks used in the teaching process; coursebook strategy consisting in balanced proportions between two values: Polishness and universalism
  • autonomous Polish language teaching (= grammar + lexis + use) versus integrated teaching (Polish language in the historic and culture context), language and literature, language and literary works connections with other culture fields, e.g. cinema, theatre, cabaret performances, painting, sculpture
  • content selection on account of receiver characteristics taking into consideration external language parameters such as belonging to language and cultural community age, gender, education, learner’s cognitive and communicative needs
  • choice of methodological approach when presenting language and knowledge about language (language teaching versus teaching about language): structuralism (emphasis on the form), cognitivism ( emphasis on the semantics), communication (emphasis on the situational use of language)
  • coursebook subject matters, range of topic selection, language view of Poland and Polish people, social changes and their language expression, criteria for text selection, literary texts, ‘higher’ culture texts, popular literature texts

PRACTICAL CLASSES:

  • coursebooks for beginning students
  • coursebooks for pre-intermediate students
