Methodology of Teaching Polish Language as a Foreign One

LECTURES AND PRACTICAL CLASSES – BEGINNING LEVEL:
- characteristic of beginning student; scope of lexical and grammar material and language skills that the beginning student should master during the course; comparison of two teaching programs for beginning groups (program related to communicative method and program referring to grammar method – description and comparison, indicating benefits and deficiency)
- presentation of coursebooks and materials helpful when teaching Polish as a foreign language for beginning students; attempt at text and exercise production for beginners in accordance with suggested grammar and lexical material, choice of authentic texts when working with beginning groups
- presentation and analysis of synopsis prepared for the beginners – time organization during classes, amount of introduced vocabulary, way of working with written and spoken texts etc. (learning to create synopsis)
LECTURES AND PRACTICAL CLASSES – PRE-INTERMEDIATE LEVEL:
- pre-intermediate students: scope of possessed abilities and language competence, conditions concerning further language learning, language needs, goals and techniques of teaching at the pre-intermediate level; review of the accessible coursebooks and teaching materials
- development of particular skills at the pre-intermediate level (techniques, teaching materials, skills integration); types of exercises and their submission to the aims of the lesson; proportions of particular parts of the classes due to indicated glottodidactic goals
- work with text (original, adapted and fabricated texts, aims and ways of using text in teaching Polish as a foreign language, task preparation and carrying out, dictionary work); ludic techniques in teaching polish as a foreign language
LECTURES AND PRACTICAL CLASSES – ADVANCED LEVEL:
- advanced students: scope of possessed abilities and language competence, conditions review of the accessible coursebooks and teaching materials
- ways of working with an authentic text (press materials, literary text, fragments of press and TV interviews); types of exercises on text understanding, creating independent utterances in accordance with requirements of particular speech genre
- presentation of programs for advanced level and creating one’s own programs
Moreover, the cycle of classes will be conducted by lecturers and teachers from foreign seminars and Polish studies with whom The School of Polish Language and Culture of Silesian University cooperates as a part of university bilateral agreements and of Erasmus program contracts
